Lauren Schaaf- Feminist art

I read a lot from the book The Nature of Art to gain knowledge about feminist art and the power of art in general on individuals and society. Towards the end of the book there's a chapter on feminist art which provided a lot of information and perspective. It talks about the challenge of being a feminist artist and having to create art that resonates with many women and their individual experiences on tough topics. Many argue that politics have no place in art and is too controversial.

Women have been the subject of art for generations but have just recently become the artist behind the artwork. This is an important step for women and gives them to opportunity to create something of their own that has the power to share the challenges of the feminine experience. Often, there are many different rules and acceptable behaviors for women compared to their men counterparts. Even in today's society women are often excluded or shamed for certain behaviors that are often overlooked when their male equals take part in similar behaviors.

Feminist art begins to bridge the gap by educating the general public about women's experiences such as rape and abductions and simply the culture that surrounds how women are supposed to act. Perhaps by bringing these situations to light and the effects that they can have on women psyche then we can educate and start creating prevention methods that will lead to a decrease in these gruesome acts.

Feminist art is slowly redefining what art is and what it means to portray fine art.
