Brian Harrell Class Discussion 9/11/17

Class 9/11/17

In class today we discussed the Lashaw Cave as well as the Vanderloo's work. Dr. Redick talked about each cave painting and how they are actually second hand reality, they were drawn by painters who saw the "first reality" being the horses and used that mental image as inspiration in their work. I liked this discussion for it reminded me of a Sigmund Freud quote: “I could draw it, the dreamer often tells, but I do not know how to express it in words”.

This is a topic that I really do like for I understand art to be just like philosophy. Art, like philosophy, reflects reality in its relation to man, and depicts man, his spiritual world, and the relations between individuals in their interaction with the world. There are some things that words alone cannot properly illustrate and for me, this is the sole reason is why for me I find art to be so magical. Art is able to fill the void between reality and understanding.

Next, we moved on to watching several videos about rituals, especially of the dancing kind and how truly passionate they can be. We focused on the importance of the senses through rituals and how just as the dancers in the video did, closing your eyes, bodily movements and other actions of the senses can truly enhance these experiences.
