Christopher Gabro - Schopenhauer

Schopenhauer claims that art is solely focused on the Universal Idea that stands behind the art object rather than just focusing on a particular.  I disagree with this claim in that artworks that focus on a particular rather than attempting bring together a gestalt not only speak loudly but offer insight to potential new insights.  For example, if a work of art is totalizing in its representation than it fails to allow the perceiver that feeling of wonder and puzzlement of what could come after the painting.  A full embodied Idea within a painting stands flat; a particular idea expressed stands in bold in its ability to lead the audience to wonder about how this particular fits in with the larger idea being expressed.
