Jasmine Baskerville- Behind The Ink (Tolstoy)

Tattoos can be more than just pretty art. Tattoos can in a way, be a self-reflection of ourselves engraved on the outside. Each tattoo has a story. The story that someone chooses to mark themselves with is a visible truth there for everyone to see. Some of the most common tattoos are of birth dates, death dates, cultural reminders, religious significance, important people, or symbols. These personal reminders/stories reveal a lot about a person.
My tattoo for example is a story of all my struggles and obstacles I faced and how I overcame them. My tattoo is a symbol of power, female strength, and beauty. For me mind over matter became real for me. I went from a place of low confidence to a place where I had a higher appreciation for myself, because I now know I am divine. I am a strong woman and if I ever forget this message, I can look to my tattoo for support. It is more than just pretty art for me it’s a lesson.

According Leo N. Tolstoy, in the Nature of art, art “through the use of such devices as color, sound, and movement, art communicates to its audience a feeling or emotion that the artist has previously experienced”. Using his definition, tattoos are a form of communicative art. This definition fits it because often time people with tattoos love being asked about their tattoo. It is a way to share a piece of information about yourself. The story behind a tattoo is communicated to the viewer.
