Jasmine Baskerville- Bella Gaia
I went to the Bella Gaia performance this month at the Ferguson and I it was a wonderful art presentation about human impacts both good and bad. It combined elements of dance, film, live music, and culture. There were very few words involved so that it could be understood internationally. It went into depth about different parts of the world and their beliefs and customs. The live music added a layer of realness. What I mean by this is that the experience was even more real to me because I could see the performers rather than hearing just a recording. The dance was particularly interesting because the dancers embodied traditional dances from other cultures on stage. The various filming techniques captured the sense of actually being there. It brought me to India, Egypt, Asia, and North America to celebrate humanity. Then the performance transformed and contrasted the celebration by capturing the devastation created by humans on the Earth. It was as if the director was telling us yes humanity should be celebrated but not at the expense of our planet. Overall it was a beautiful performance that engaged my eyes, ears, and senses.
