Jasmine Baskerville-The idea of happy endings
In hollywood, the hero is the good
guy who defeats the evil to save the innocent. Good always wins. Movies get a
nice ending. However, in reality evil is everywhere even in the heroes.
Everyone doesn't get saved. There is no perfect ending and unfortunately
the good innocent people do suffer in life sometimes. The good deed
of an individual is not enough to guarantee a happy ending. So, why are happy
endings so desirable? They are obviously false representations. They are
blissful ignorance’s and are similar to dreams. In my opinion, it is the
illustration and the hope it creates. It is art because it offers its audience
a place to escape from reality. It is a form of relaxation. Happy endings even
though false interpretations, takes a step back from actuality. The idea of
happy endings makes reality even more bearable because of their overly
optimistic messages that take root in us at a young age. So, we grow up
believing the world is like in the fairytales. This belief protects us from the
truth. We hold on to the good in difficult situations. Happy endings for the
most part seem plausible even when we grow up. I am not saying that the world
is terrible just different than the stories. We rather repudiate the reality
and replace it with a better one with no worries.
The Matrix movie is a good
example. The main character Neo feels out of place in his reality he meets
another character named Morpheus who then shows him that his reality is false.
Since he is the protagonist he automatically is alive in the end (Actually he
dies then comes back to life after being shot several times) and the antagonist
automatically loses at the end. But when we are watching movies like this
it is hard not to imagine yourself in the main characters position. It is idea
to be someone other than yourself because then your personal worries disappear as
you take on a new persona.
