John Vernon- Becoming Clear Mirrors
C.S. Lewis states, “in the New Testament the art of life itself is an art of imitation: can we, believing this, believe that literature, which must derive from real life, is to aim at being creative, original, and spontaneous?” His quote from Christianity and Literature introduces his viewpoint on becoming clean mirrors. If we consider the idea of a mirror, it is for us to visualize and see an image of ourselves. A mirror reflects our appearance and often if what we don’t like how we look, we try to do something about it. Lewis says, “Our whole destiny seems to lie in the opposite direction, in being as little as possible ourselves, in acquiring a fragrance that is not our own bur borrowed, in becoming clean mirrors filled with the image of a face that is not ours.” I like his point here. As a Christian, it is challenging and often a common struggle, but we must do our best to understand that God’s accepts us for who we are, no matter how we look. Our lives need to reflect the good and intention to be content with circumstances given to us and seek comfort in that.
