Taylor Duffy - Selene
12/11
The statue of the women by Lion's Gate Bridge is called 'Selene.' The women made of white marble sits in the middle of the pond, hugging her legs and resting her chin on her hand. The statue is the perfect example of art for arts sake. The statue is stunning yet so simple. The way she sits hugging herself makes her smaller than she should be. Her face is calm and peaceful as she looks toward the river. The piece of art is meant to complement the nature around it more than it is to draw attention to itself.
All around her are beautiful waters, greenery, and a scenic road. everything around and including the statue is peaceful and raw. The statue itself admires the natural beauty around it. You can feel how serene everything is around you and it becomes a religious experience. That is what art is truly meant to do. It should not draw so much attention toward itself but it should shine light on beauty in nature, life, religion, other people, and yourself. It is a representation of something much bigger than itself.
